"Mexican fire opal is one of the most striking gemstones in the world, born from the volcanic activity that shaped the highlands of Mexico millions of years ago. Unlike Australian sedimentary opals, Mexican fire opals form in cavities of volcanic rocks such as rhyolite, where silica-rich water deposited layers that crystallized into this fiery gem . Revered by the Aztecs and Mayans as the "stone of the bird of paradise," this gem has been mined in Mexico for over 500 years . What sets Mexican fire opal apart is its brilliant body color ranging from yellow to orange and the highly prized cherry-red, combined with transparency that allows it to be faceted, unlike most opals which are cut as cabochons"
